The Kelabit Highlands, Sarawak’s ‘Shangri- La’, provide a welcome relief from the coastal plains. At 1000 metres above sea level, the climate in Bario is noticeably cooler than in the lowlands. Visitors be warned: a light pullover or jacket is needed to keep warm at night!

The Kelabits cultivate Bario rice, a fragrant variety of this precious grain, which is greatly sought after in Sarawak.
